Best Lawn Moss Killer – Buyer’s Guide
Moss can get to be a very annoying problem on your lawn. They don’t look great and the problem can get a whole lot worse if left untreated, which is why it’s so important to have a good lawn moss killer to get rid of the problem. If the product is good, you can even eradicate your problem in as much as a week. But what should you be looking for in a lawn moss killer, and what causes the issue to begin with?
Why Do You Need Moss Killer?
You may be wondering why you need a moss killer to begin with when you can simply rake it away. Seems more efficient, and you’ll save money, right? This would be a grave error.
To start with, if you have a number of patches of your lawn with moss on them, if you rake away the moss without an efficient lawn moss killer you run the risk of making the moss spread across the garden if you miss even a little bit of it when raking it up.
Moss can grow very quickly and in large amounts, so the last thing you want is to make it bad in another area of your garden.
The other thing to note is that it’s a lot easier to remove dead moss. A moss killer will break down the moss and kill it, and this means it doesn’t have any strength. This means it’s a lot easier to remove it and you’ll spend a lot less time trying to get rid of it.
Causes of Moss on a Lawn
As we touched upon earlier in this article, there are a number of different things that can influence how and why moss grows on your lawn. There are also certain areas where the lawn will suffer with moss more than others.
These include areas of drought stressed grass, areas that are worn down from being excessively trodden on, areas underneath trees or other shaded areas, waterlogged and wet areas and areas of acidic conditions or infertile soil. Ultimately, while a moss killer will help with eradicating the moss you should still try to rectify the problem areas.
When Should You Apply A Lawn Moss Killer?
Generally you tend to find that moss spores are produced primarily during the autumn and spring. As a result of this, it’s recommended by most experts to apply moss treatment before it has a chance to happen.
With that being said, you should be able to spread it out onto any bare patched as soon as you are able to so weeds don’t take root on any bare patched, so you will need to ensure that your grass is growing before you apply the moss killer treatment.
The best time to apply your moss killer will be during the autumn or spring. You will need to do it as soon as your weather gets warmer and your grass starts growing if you choose to do it in spring.
This should really be before any sporing in April. When you’re looking at doing it in autumn then you should ensure the dry weather is done and you have wetter conditions. Usually September is the optimal time.
Things to Consider
Lawn Size
The kind of moss killer that will be suitable for you depends largely on the size of your lawn. If your lawn is larger then, of course, you are going to need a large capacity lawn moss killer. How effective it is is determined by the ratio of water to the moss killer.
If you do have a larger lawn then you should opt for a lawn spreader. If your lawn is smaller then you can opt for moss killers you are able to spread by hand or using a sprayer.
Kid and Pet Friendly
Some lawn moss killer can be very dangerous to pets and children. When using a lawn moss killer, as you would with a weed killer, you should ensure that you are waiting a certain amount of time before you’re letting any pets or children onto the lawn.
For some products you should wait as many as 5 days, but others don’t require you to wait that long. You should also ensure that the lawn moss killer is non stain so it doesn’t end up staining your patios, decks, and pavings.
Grass Food
Your first concern is killing the moss, but another element that’s just as important is making sure you have a strong lawn. It’s very useful to get a lawn moss killer that is also able to help your lawn by nourishing it while simultaneously doing what you bought it for. Some of the best products on the market also have good nutritional content for your grass!
Should you opt for a granular or a liquid moss killer?
Much like other types of lawn treatments, moss killer comes in either a liquid or a granular form. Generally if you want the treatment to work faster then you’re better off opting for a liquid or soluble moss killer, but they are also much lighter and don’t tend to kill the lower layers of the moss.
Granular products in contrast are much slower working but they are heavier, so you will get right to the root of your moss problem. Sadly there are not many granular products dedicated to killing moss, and they’re usually just part of a lawn feed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make my own moss killer?
If you don’t want to buy any of the products on this list (though it’s definitely worth your time to do so) you can also make your own home brew moss killer. It’s actually pretty effective and it isn’t going to cause your plants or wildlife to get damaged as a chemical solution would. Here’s how you can make it:
The water, salt, vinegar, and soap method: Mix together the salt, vinegar and water together using a large bucket or basin, then you can add in the soap to make up about 20% of the overall mixture. Then, administer the mixture to the moss by using a spray bottle.
You should be aware though that this will kill some other plants so you need to be extremely careful about where you spray it. You can just scrape up any dead moss after a couple of days once you’ve applied it, and then discard the dead moss.
Water and iron sulphate method: the iron sulphate adds alkali into the soil so it will help to make the grass grow more than the moss. To make it, mix together 3oz of iron sulphate wit 5 gallons of water, then pout then generously over the moss with a watering device. Eventually after around 3 to 4 days, the moss will turn brown and you can remove it easily using a rake.
Warm water and baking soda method: to make this lawn moss killer from home, simply mix together 3 tablespoons of baking soda along with 2 pints of warm water. Then, mix these together consistently and then apply it to the moss with a spray bottle.
This usually also works best when used on a sunny day when it’s warm. The sun’s heat will enable the moss to dry out more quickly so it works faster.
How do I apply a lawn moss killer?
How you apply the product will largely depend on the type of moss killer that you choose to use, as the dosage can wildly vary. You can use some of them while it’s wet while you can use some of them while dry administered using a pump sprayer, a watering hand or by hand by using gloves.
Most manufacturers advise that you apply it during cool damp conditions in the majority of cases, and don’t apply it when it’s very dry or hot. You will need to make sure that you are properly following the dosage instructions as if you don’t use enough it won’t be effective enough, and if you use too much of the solution you can ruin your grass.
After you’ve applied the formula, allow a certain amount of time for it to work. Usually this is around 7 days. Once it’s dead then you can remove the moss using a rake.
